Case Studies

  • Harvard University, Harvard Kennedy School — Budget System & Financial Reporting.  Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) was looking for a centralized, position control budget system to support a web-based submission and approval process that communicated with the University’s data warehouse. HKS evaluated several off-the-shelf budget systems, but were unable to find one that satisfied their needs. DLA provided a customized solution that included daily imports from PeopleSoft and a cube-based financial reporting solution.
  • Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary — Corporate Data Warehouse. MEEI was looking for a way to avoid manually entering data from multiple financial applications into an obsolete DBase reporting package in order to generate and distribute monthly research reports. DLA assisted in designing and implementing a data warehouse and reporting suite which allows all members of the research community to produce on-demand reports as soon as project and financial data are available.
  • MIT, Technology Licensing Office — Forrester Intellectual Property System. MIT was looking for a new system to manage tracking, regulatory compliance, licensing, billing, profit measurement, and royalty distribution for their extensive portfolio of patents, software, trademarks and other intellectual property. They wanted to replace an aging Ingres database and two dozen supplementary FileMaker databases with a single integrated application which would interface with MIT’s accounting system, MIT’s data warehouse, and a patent prosecution system. DLA provided a customized solution.
  • MPM Capital, LLC — Integration of CRM System. MPM Capital needed assistance in their IT department to fully integrate the Microsoft Customer Relationship Management system with the many customized add-ins.
  • Profile Inspection Services — Inspectors Program. Profile required a unique application to track and manage property inspections, by allowing users to perform property inspections and submit their data back to the office.
  • Red Lion Controls (formerly Sixnet LLC) — Manufacturing Support System. Red Lion needed a partner who they could trust to guide them through a critical time of growth. This ISO-9002 certified manufacturing company needed to develop and implement an IT Strategy to support their growing business.
  • State of New York, Office of the State Comptroller — Claims and Reporting Information System (CRIS). The State of New York needed a new application to manage unclaimed property life, replacing an aging mainframe-based system. • SunSetter Products — Manufacturing, Distribution and Customer Management. SunSetter Products is a direct marketing manufacturing company. Their dynamic business model required a custom enterprise application that is both robust and easy to maintain due to their always updating marketing plan.
  • Various Boston Area Hospitals — Financial Reporting. Hospitals have a need for consistent and timely financial reporting in several dimensions that include reporting by provider and practice, by project (life-to-date) and special purpose funds, and by any number of organizational levels. Reports need to be understandable to non-financial users, many of whom are crucially interested because of the way that compensation plans are set up.
  • Various Industries — Billing. Billing systems are more likely to required customized development than just about another application in a company. This is because billing is an “outward-facing” application that produces invoices and statements which are likely to be scrutinized by customers. Also, in many cases, the underlying source transactions come from a variety of sources and are not present in the accounting systems.

And, of course, we developed our own system for internal billing, cash receipts, vendor payments, payroll and general ledger.  It is a ‘semi-custom’ application with internally-developed code linked to an off-the-shelf product (Adapta accounts) for our General Ledger.  DAISy — The D. Lawton Associates Administrative Information System.
